Windies restore pride

NOTTINGHAM, England (AP):

THE WEST Indies restored pride and regained credibility as a one-day cricket team by beating England by 93 runs yesterday to win the series 2-1.

Runako Morton and Chris Gayle each scored 82, and the West Indies punished England's wayward fielding in compiling an impressive 289 for five at Trent Bridge.

Man-of-the-Match Daren Powell's three early wickets then had England struggling at 33 for three and the home side laboured to 196 all out despite a half century by Owais Shah and 44 from Paul Collingwood, who lost his debut series as captain. Powell finished with 4-40 and Fidel Edwards 3-30.

Having lost the first game by 79 runs at Lord's, Gayle's team beat England by 61 at Edgbaston on Wednesday and arrived at Trent Bridge with far more confidence despite being outplayed 3-0 with one draw in the four-match Test series.

'We are capable'

"It was a low, the disgrace and embarrassment of the Test series and this has now put us on top to show the public what we are capable of," said Gayle, who became the team's stand-in captain after Ramnaresh Sarwan was sidelined with a shoulder injury during the Test series.

"Hopefully this will be a motivational factor to move from strength to strength from here on in," he said.

Collingwood, who now hands the captaincy back to Michael Vaughan for the Test series against India, lamented England's latest one-day failure which comes after a poor performance at the World Cup in the Caribbean.

"It's been difficult but credit to the West Indies, they played some good, aggressive cricket," he said. "But we have learnt a lot in the last few days and we need to take that on.

Need positive view

"We lost early wickets today which didn't help, but we need to take a positive view, go back to our counties and practice our skills. We lacked consistency again. We have some good one-day cricketers but it's putting it all together."

Powell removed the first three England batsmen inside the first nine overs.

Matt Prior, one of England's quickest scorers, was out for only one in the third over, Alastair Cook made 18 and Kevin Pietersen lasted only two balls without scoring, all three of them the victims of well-taken catches.

Ian Bell made 27 before he gave Dwayne Smith his second catch at 72 for four and then Shah and Collingwood gave the side a glimpse of a recovery with a fifth wicket stand of 73.

Shah took a single off Dwayne Bravo to reach his 50 off 63 balls but was out in the next over when he attempted to sweep Dwayne Smith, got a top edge and the ball looped high in the air for a simple catch by wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin.

Wickets, overs running out

Collingwood made 44 before he played on to Bravo in the 34th over to leave England on 162 for six - still 128 short with wickets and overs running out.

Edwards then struck twice. He had Dimitri Mascarenhas brilliantly caught at slip by Gayle for five and Liam Plunkett swatting a catch in the deep to Marlon Samuels for two.

Powell then returned to remove Stuart Broad to another slip catch by Gayle and England had lost five wickets for only 26 runs in 7.1 overs.

Although the last wicket pair of Monty Panesar and James Anderson frustrated the West Indies bowlers with a stand of 25, the victory was never in doubt.

wayward fielding punished

The West Indies batsmen punished England's wayward fielding to post a difficult target on a wicket that gave some help to the swing bowlers.

While Gayle played a cautious innings in 126 balls to provide the backbone of his team's innings from opener, Morton made his off only 89 balls, with one six and six boundaries. He shared in a fifth-wicket partnership of 92 off only 47 deliveries with Bravo.

Bravo made 42 off just 24 balls as the West Indies averaged 10 runs an over off the last 10 and England's bowlers sent down wide or occasionally chest-high deliveries. Two overs from Broad cost 36 runs.
