Rampaul turns his attention to coaching

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad

Out-of-favour West Indies fast bowler Ravi Rampaul was one of 20 participants successfully completing the West Indies Cricket Board Level One coaching course staged here last week.

The 23-year-old Rampaul, who has played 20 one-day inter-nationals, was one of four senior Trinidad and Tobago cricketers who passed the exam. The others were all-rounders Rayad Emrit and Samuel Badree and wicketkeeper/batsman Gibran Mohammed.

Sidelined

Rampaul, who has been sidelined by injury several times throughout his short career, last played for the Windies during the tour of South Africa earlier this year.

Wendell Coppin, the WICB territorial officer who was one of the facilitators of the course, said it was a delight at having the Trinidadian and West Indies players involved.

"They were role models for the other participants and especially the kids," Coppin stated.

Forbes Persaud, the T&T Cricket Board's chief executive, was high in praise of the participants for their enthusiasm and commitment shown.

"I am extremely happy at the enthusiasm shown by the senior cricketers. They led by example. I am looking forward for more level one and two courses later this year," Persaud said.

Participants were taken through several modules on coaching, fitness in cricket, batting, bowling and fielding drills, bio-mechanics and skills acquisition.

Presentations were further enhanced by video footage.

Coppin was assisted by former West Indies women's Test captain, Stepanie Power; T&T's national coach, Kelvin Williams, and WICB Level Two coach, Roy Saroop.
