Women cricketers a win away from title

JAMAICA'S WOMEN cricketers moved within a win of capturing their first West Indies Women's Tournament title after rain forced the abandonment of their fourth round top-of-the-table clash against champions Trinidad and Tobago at Gros Islet, St Lucia, yesterday.

The match-up, which was well attended by West Indies women's cricket selectors who are eyeing talent for next year's Women's Cricket World Cup to be held in Australia, and the Women's 20/20 World Championship scheduled for England, was called off without a ball being bowled after rain left the outfield in a wet and soggy condition.

The results

The result, which saw both teams receiving a point, put Jamaica on 10 points, three more than Trinidad and Tobago and four more than Barbados and Guyana.

"It hurt the other teams more than us ... it is just that we would have wanted to play," said coach Cleyon Smith. The (WI) selectors were here and one would want to play so that they could take a look at players. But a good result is a good result and we now need to win at least one of our remaining two matches to claim the crown," he said.

The Jamaicans, who defeated Dominica, Grenada and Barbados in their opening fixtures, will play Guyana today and St Lucia tomorrow in their remaining matches.
