Haynes, Perry among nominees

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):

Four nominees under the age of 45, including three who have played international cricket in the last decade, are among a list of nine to be interviewed for places on the West Indies selection panel here yesterday and today.

Well-placed sources told CMC Sports that former Leeward Islands captain and opening batsman Stuart Williams of Nevis, Barbados' most successful first-class captain and wicket-keeper/batsman Courtney Browne, as well as the Jamaican pair of leg-spinning all-rounder Robert Haynes and off-spinner Nehemiah Perry were the four under the age of 45.

The 37-year-old Browne, who last played for West Indies three years ago, is the youngest. Williams, 38, exited the international arena in 2002 and Perry, 40, was ignored after 2000. Haynes is aged 43.

They are to be joined by the sole survivor of the last senior selection panel Clyde Butts, a Guyanese who turned 51 last Tuesday and who gained a reputation as an off-spinner; former Dominica, Windward Islands, Combined Islands and West Indies 'B' team opening batsman Lockhart Sebastien, 52; and the Trinidad & Tobago trio of Larry Gomes, a reliable middle-order batsman in the glory days of West Indies cricket during the late 1970s to mid 1980s and who celebrates his 55th birthday on Sunday, opener Bryan Davis, now 68 and former left-arm spinner Raphick Jumadeen, 60.

Butts served with greats, opening batsman Gordon Greenidge (chairman) of Barbados and Antiguan fast bowler Andy Roberts, on the last selection committee.

Sources said there were originally 12 contenders on a short list but Roberts, former Barbados captain and middle-order batsman Roland Holder and fast bowler Colin Stuart of Guyana were "deleted" for "various reasons".

Greenidge was a selector for the last two terms but he did not get a nomination from any of the six-member territories (Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Trinidad & Tobago and Windward Islands), the sources told CMC Sports.

According to the sources, six of the nine are to be chosen to look after the selection of West Indies senior, junior and women's cricket teams.
