Discus gold for Tanto

A world record throw by Tanto Campbell gave him the gold medal in the discus event at the International Paralympic Committee World Athletics Championships in Assen, Netherlands yesterday.

Campbell won the discus class F56 with a throw of 39.08m. His new mark beat the previous world record of 37.52m held by M. Sadeghimehryar of Iran.

Campbell, in fact, broke the previous world record with his first attempt and improved on it with each successive throw. His opening round throw was 37.66m followed by 38.98m and 39.08m. Second was Miroslav Sperk of the Czech Republic with a throw of 38.40m and third went to M. Dabbaghzadeh of Iran with 37.14m.

Alphanso Cunningham of Jamaica placed fifth with a best of 15.65m in frigid conditions in the javelin throw class F53. First was Abdolreza Jokar of Iran with a new world record throw of 20.22m. Second went to Adrian Paz of Mexico with a throw of 19.50m and third, Mauro Maximo also of Mexico with a throw of 19.36m.
