Ver in Reebok warm-up

Leighton Levy, Gleaner Writer

Two-time Olympic 200 metres champion, Veronica Campbell-Brown, is down to participate at a local meet in Florida this weekend as she prepares for the Reebok Grand Prix in New York on May 30.

Campbell-Brown, the 2007 100-metre world champion, had been sidelined for about five weeks nursing an inflamed toe and only resumed training three weeks ago, as she prepares for the outdoor season that includes the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Berlin, Germany, from August 15-23.

The injury forced her to pull out of the Jamaica Invitational that was held at the National Stadium on May 2. The injured toe, she said, has been healing well and training has been going well since she resumed her preparations for the Reebok meet, which will be her first major outing for the season.

"At this point, I am satisfied with the way things are going and all I can do is continue to train hard and hope that everything will go well," she said.

Speaking on Sportsnation, a local sports talk show earlier this week, she said her run at the meet this weekend in Claremont, Florida, will be a technical one. "It will be just to see what I need to work on before New York, so it will just be to work on a few technical things," she said.

As for the National Champion-ships at the end of June, Campbell-Brown said she is still to decide whether she will compete in the 100 metres at the meet, seeing that as the defending women's champion, she gets an automatic spot in the World Championships.

She explained that she will discuss the situation with her team before making any decision on whether to skip the 100 metres. One deciding factor, she indicated, was whether by then she would have had enough races under her belt in preparation for the World Championships.
