Foster grabs women's Under-21 Carib title

Jamaican Yvonne Foster emerged women's Under-21 singles champion by defeating Ashley Quashie of Trinidad and Tobago, at the Caribbean Region Table Tennis Federation (CRTTF) Championship on Wednesday night at the University of Technology Auditorium.

Foster, the 15-year-old Jamaica national champion, outplayed Quashie 11-8, 12-10, 11-7 for the title.

Advanced to final

Meanwhile, as action continued in the singles championships yesterday afternoon, Jamaica's Kane Watson advanced to the men's Under-21 final after eliminating Jaime Palton of French Guiana, 11-6, 6-11, 11-3, 11-5 against Barbadian Anderson Carrington, who prevented an all-Jamaica showdown by defeating Don Petrinand 11-8, 11-3, 11-8..

Watson's countryman, Joseph Dibbs, was ousted in the senior men's semi-finals by Aruba's Remy Delange, who won in six sets yesterday. Delange eliminated Dibbs 12-10, 8-11, 11-9, 8-11, 12-10, 11-7, to set up a championship game with Barbadian Kevin Farley, who upset France-based Trinidadian, Dexter St Louis, four sets to two in their men's semi-final.

Strong all-round game

Farley used a strong all-round game to outgun the Olympian Louis 11-8, 2-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-5, 12-10 in a tense match to advance to last night's final.

The other finals that were slated for last night were the women's between T&T's Rheann Chung and French Guiana's Corinne Baillant and the veterans' final pitting Aruba's Ruddy Raga against French Guiana's Alex Tertullien.

In the women's semi-final, Chung beat Foster 11-3, 11-4, 11-4, 11-1 and Baillant outplayed Quashie 11-6, 14-12, 14-12, 10-12, 11-5. Chung is already a triple gold medallist here.

She engineered T&T's women's team event triumph, linked up with Astra Edwards for the women's doubles title and also captured the mixed doubles gold medal with St Louis.
