Soldiers too strong for UWI
Defending champions Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) defeated the University of the West Indies, (UWI) 3-1, in division one action of the Jamaica Table Tennis Association/Northwest Develop-ment Club League, at Up Park Camp on Saturday.
In the day's other games, University of Technology (UTech) beat Hy-Performance 3-1 and Athletico Port Antonio blanked hosts Pembroke Hall 3-0.
The JDF now lead the standings with 10 points, followed by Athletico Port Antonio and Hy-Performance with nine each, while UTech and Pembroke Hall are tied on eight and UWI have three.
The top four finishers will qualify for semi-finals.
In the match between the JDF and UWI, Phillip Drummond won two games for the soldiers by defeating Robert Thaxter 3-0 and edging Rudolph Sinclair 3-2. Altamont Henry won the third match for the JDF, 3-0 over Konata Beluchi.
Sinclair pulled one back for UWI, when he stopped Christopher Marsh 3-1.
In the encounter between UTech and Hy-Performance, national representative Kane Watson won two matches for UTech.
In women's action, defending champions Pembroke Hall defeated hosts JDF 3-1 in division three and Pembroke Hall I blanked Windalco Kirkvine Sports Club II 5-0.
In division four matches, last year's beaten finalists, Windalco Kirkvine Sports Club I, thrashed Pembroke Hall 4-1, while Pembroke Hall edged Windalco Kirkvine Sports Club II 3-2.
Pembroke Hall lead the standings in division three with 13 points, one more that UWI.
They are followed by Windalco Kirkvine Sports Club (nine), Hy-Performance (eight), UTech (three) and Highgate United (two).
The top four finishers will contest the semi-finals.
The league continues today with the JDF hosting Windalco Kirkvine SC at Up Park Camp and UTech at home to Hy-Performance in division two matches, both starting at 7 p.m.
