'My goal is to be the best'

TRINIDAD AND Tobago's 13-year-old dynamo, Catherine Spicer, was bubbling with confidence after she won the decisive third game against Jamaica's Kristen McKen-zie, 12, in the women's team final of the Caribbean Table Tennis Championships on Tuesday night at the University of Technology.

Spicer came to the table with her country up 2-0 and just a win away from securing the team championship. The spicy Catherine won in four sets, 11-5, 11-8 , 8-11, 11-4, to complete a 3-0 route for the Trinis.

"I am happy that I was able to help my team to victory," Spicer said.

"My goal is to be the best that I can be," she said.

Spicer, who attends Naparima High School for Girls in San Fernando, Trinidad, added that she would love to emulate Rheann Chung, an exceptionally gifted player for T&T.

"I love the way she plays, she's foreign-based, she's a good player," Spicer said.

Spicer's coach, Aleena Edwards, said she has improved "tremendously" since taking up the sport. "Catherine started playing the game over a year ago and she has improved tremendously. She has determination and a drive to win ... Trinidad's senior team is in good hands," coach Edwards said.

Spicer has now turned her attention to the doubles and singles competitions, which began yesterday.
