U-15 TT teams to compete at Latin American Champs

Robert Bailey, Freelance Writer

Jamaica's male and female under-15 team will depart tomorrow for the Latin American Cadet & Junior Table Tennis Championships, which will be held in Cartagena, Colombia, June 13-17.

Both teams gained qualification to this stage of the competition after finishing first and third ,respectively, in Guyana in April. Good performances in Colombia will ensure their qualification for the World Cadet finals to be staged in Heisingborg, Sweden in October.

Led by Foster

The female team will be led by national champion Yvonne Foster (Meadowbrook High) and is completed by Ashli Alexander (Ardenne), Kristen McKenzie (Campion) and Shaunda Brash (Bishop Gibson High).

The male team comprises Nicholas Mahfood (American International School of Kingston), John-Marc Chambers (St Georges' College) and Kristen's brother, Jordan McKenzie (Campion).

Simon Tomlinson of Ardenne High, who also qualified from Guyana, will travel to Colombia to compete in the under-18 singles event and if he finishes in the top three, will go on to play in the World Junior Championships to be held in New Zealand in December.

Sandra Riettie will be the coach in charge of the female team, while Colin McNeish will coach the boys.

Two fathers, Garth McKenzie and Neville Alexander who both went to Guyana as supporting parents, will now serve as managers of both teams.
