Tegat wanted strikers to show 'killer instinct'

Newly appointed Village United coach and former national player, Paul 'Tegat' Davis, believes his team is not deserving of their last place in the Cash Plus Premier League.

After his first game in charge yesterday against Boys' Town at Collie Smith Drive, which ended 1-1, Davis said he expects a climb up the tables in the second round after finishing the first on five points.

"Seeing the team and speaking with persons, we do not deserve to be where we are right now," said Davis.

Davis joined the team on Thursday, taking over from Fitzroy Reid, and added that his team could have won the game if his strikers were playing true to form.

"Sometimes as a striker you have to be selfish and I wasn't seeing that killer instinct from my strikers. So in the second round we're looking to do much better," he pointed out.

Early lead

Village took an early lead when Lacon Brissett tapped in from close in the seventh minute. Boys' Town equalised 10 minutes later when Oneil McDonald scored a sweetly timed header from a Michael Campbell corner.

Boys' Town ended the first half strongly but came out completely flat in the second period. Village were given all the space in the world to set up their attack, and to make it worse, Boys' Town wasted several clear chances in the penalty area.

Describing his team's per-formance as lethargic, Boys' Town coach Andrew Price said his players hadn't recovered from Thursday's 2-1 win over Harbour View.

"We didn't get going today as the guys were probably tired but the good thing is we stood out there and fought," said Price.

He added: "We got many chances but didn't convert (and in the second round) we have to improve on our finishing."

Price also said he expects a better second round with the return of injured players Peter Keyes, Xavian Virgo, Troy Porter, Asrick Samuels and Andrew Jackson. George Vernal, Denzil Watson, Richie Francis and Renae Lloyd, who are playing overseas, are expected to return in January.

Boys' Town are tied on 14 points with Arnett Gardens but are in eighth place with an inferior goal difference.
