Firemen, Gleaner cop major awards

The Gleaner and Jamaica Fire Brigade copped the major awards at the annual Business House domino awards ceremony at the NCB Sports Complex, Phoenix Avenue last Friday evening.

The function was organised by the National Association of Domino Bodies (NADB) in conjunction with sponsors, Jamaica Electrical Technologists (JET).

Defending champions the Gleaner retained the Division I Trophy, while Jamaica Fire Brigade won the Division II Trophy and proceeded to cap an unbeaten season with a narrow victory over the Gleaner in the Champion of Champions play-off.

Winston Nixon, captain of the Gleaner team accompanied by his teammates, the MVP pair of Michael 'Johnny Handsome' Leighton and Leroy Cooper, was presented with the Division I Trophy and cash prize by Rey Smith, president of the NADB.

Otis Rowe, captain of the Fire Brigade team, received the Division II Trophy and prize money. Representatives of the 28 teams in the Business House competitions (Division I and II) received certificates of participation.

In addition to Gleaner and Jamaica Fire Brigade, the others were beaten Division I finalists Air Jamaica, losing Division II finalists NWC, Campari, Tankweld, JET, Scotia Bank, Tastee, RJR, Seprod, Bank of Jamaica, LoJ, Wray & Nephew, NCB, Pre-Mix, Carib Cement, Lascelles Division, JUTC, Housing Trust, CVM, Ranger Security, Hardware & Lumber, Port Authority, SDC and City of Kingston Credit Union.

Awards went to LoJ (most improved division one team), NWC most improved in division two) and Statistical Institute (most disciplined team).

Individual awards went to Division II MVP's Otis Rowe and Robert Harris of Jamaica Fire Brigade, Clifton Hewitt of Wray & Nephew (player of the season), Calman Barrett of JET most effective captain in Division I, Leon Taylor of Carib Cement most effective captain Division II, Damian Yapp of Air Jamaica (best team manager Division I), Tamisha Campbell of Lascelles (best team manager Division II), Celia McBean of CVM (most versatile woman captain), Sandra Fraser (regional award Portland, St. Thomas), while special awards went to Leonard Luton, second vice-president of NADB; Brenda Bartley, secretary of the NADB and the Gleaner's Orville Clarke for their contribution to the development of domino over the years.
