Five teams to battle for first-round honours

Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

WITH THE final set of games in the first round of the Red Stripe Lite Beach Futbol set to get under way today, five teams stand good chances of making it to the next phase.

St. Georges, Rivoli, Harbour View, Village and Wadadah all have glorious opportunities to make their way into the second round if they can find wins.

St. Georges will go up against Clark's Town at noon and need to win to achieve a perfect record.

The team that can catch them is Maverley, who have a win and a loss after completing their first two games.

Unlikely occurrence

If St. Georges lose they can still make the final. They would have to lose by more than six clear goals to fail, which is an unlikely occurrence.

Rivoli started sprightly last week and clipped Arnett Gardens, who had won their first encounter. Arnett, with a win and a loss, will have to hope that Naggo Head, who they beat, can get the better of Rivoli today.

If that happens, all those teams will have a win and a loss and then goal difference will come into play. Not many goals have come in this group.

Arnett have a plus-one goal difference, but will have to worry if Seba can pull off a win because they have a goal difference of minus-two and just need to score three clear goals. If Rivoli win then they are through. The Rivoli/Naggo Head clash is slated for 1:30 p.m.

Harbour View go up against Tafari Lions at 2:30 p.m., with their destiny in their own hands.

After beating Tivoli, they now just have to beat the Lions, who were thrashed 7-1 by Tivoli last week.

If they achieve that, they go through; if they lose, Tivoli will go through by virtue of a higher goal difference.

Penultimate game

Village will play Star Cosmos in the penultimate game at 3:30 p.m. Star Cosmos shouldn't have lost their first game of the season against Seba, but they now have to win to make the group interesting. Village already have a win under their belt, meaning if they win they are through.

Humble Lion, who were humbled in their first game against Constant Spring are against the wall for their 5:00 p.m. fixture against Wadadah.

Wadadah were gifted 10 goals and a win when Constant Spring failed to show up last week, meaning they have to lose by at least five goals to not advance.

The first game of the day is at 11:00 a.m. between Waterhouse and Bath and is of academic importance because Portmore United qualified last week.
