Athletes ready for action

Coach Michael Dyke was upbeat yesterday, two days before Jamaica's athletes bow into action at the 13th World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada.

According to Dyke, he was very pleased with yesterday's training session. The Edwin Allen High school track and field coach said: "Our training session was very successful because all the athletes were very enthusiastic and ready to go."

The official opening ceremony for the championships takes place at 6 p.m. in Canada (4 p.m. Ja time). Dwayne Extol, the boys' captain, is expected to carry the Jamaica flag at the ceremony.

Scheduled events

Only one event, the girls' 3000 metres final, is scheduled for today. This event will be run off at 7:25 p.m. (5:25 p.m. Ja time). There are no Jamaicans in this event.

Fourteen Jamaican athletes are down to compete on tomorrow's second day of the meet.

Dyke said they will decide today which two athletes will run in tomorrow's girls' 100 metres hurdles heats. Three 100m hurdles, The Queen's Danielle Williams, Tonique Sobah of St Jago High and Immaculate High's Samantha Elliott, were selected in the squad.

"All three athletes are looking good in training and it will be a last minute decision to decide which two compete as the deadline for final declaration is at noon today," Dyke said.
