Issa sparkles with record finish

Although he won his only race of the meet in the stewards' room, 11-year-old Thomas Issa turned in a sparkling performance to establish a new a track record at last Sunday's go-kart meet, held at the Palisadoes International Raceway in Kingston.

Driving a Spanish Court Hotel-sponsored Birel Kart, Thomas, who had qualified on pole, was awarded the race after his team officials lodged a protest, following a mishap with another competitor.

"We believe that Thomas was unfairly hit by Colin Daley. The incident occurred just after the start of the race before the breaking zone. After consulting with Thomas after the race, we lodged a formal protest which we won," commented Peter Rae, who is Thomas' coach.

Outside of the record-breaking performance, Joshua Sirgany made a clean sweep in the Comer 80cc Class.

Won all three races

He won all three races and, by virtue of this, he is now in fourth place, on 42.5 points, behind the class leader Justin Sirgany 53, Jonathan Law 46, and Mark Eaton 42.5.

Had it not been for the protest lodged in the first Rotax Mini-Max Class, Colin Daley Jr. would have registered a hat-trick of wins.

Although he lost one of the races in the stewards' room, Daley still leads the class on 63.5 points, followed by Issa, 44, Williams Myers, 42 and newcomer to the class, Fraser McConnell, 18.

Among the other top performers were Justin Wong in the Rotax Junior Class. He won two races, after Matthew Williams had taken the chequered flag in the opening event of the class.

Wong, who is eyeing the champion-ship, leads the group on 55 points ahead of Williams, 49.5, Philip Myers 37, and Samantha Summerbell 32.5.

Peter Moodie Jr. dominated the Shifter Class, winning two of the three races. He is now on 57.5 points, leading Joel Jackson, who is on 55.5 and third place Chris Myers on 44.

Matthew Mair shared the honours with Sheldon Morgan in the Rotax Master Class. He took the chequered flag twice, while Morgan won the final race for the day.

According to the JKA standings, Mair is in front on 64.5 points, followed by Morgan on 57.5, Ricardo Walters 38.5 and Joshua Wright 36.5.

The competition takes a break now to facilitate students preparing for exams. Racing resumes in July.
