Saunders, Henry top All Jamaica

Gareth Henry and Olympian Nigella Saunders captured the male and female singles titles, at the All Jamaica Senior Badminton Championships, at the Constant Spring Golf Club's Racquet Complex on Sunday.

Saunders successfully defended her singles and doubles crowns, when she first brushed off the challenge of Carla Grant 21-6, 21-5, then teamed with Geordine Henry to defeat Shawnekka Phillips and Cortia Boyd 21-17, 21-10.

Henry, the national junior champion, improved on his two second place finishes last year with a comfortable 21-14, 21-15 win over Kashif Bernard, before partnering his sister, Geordine, to beat Bernard and Boyd 21-13, 21-16 in the mixed-doubles final.

Men's doubles final

Henry also made it to the men's doubles final with Chadwick Parsons, but was denied the triple as the top-seeded pair lost to the unseeded Myles brothers, Vijay and Willroy, 21-18, 13-21, 21-17.

In the Masters category (35 years and over), the pair of Joseph Clarke and Ricardo Teape successfully defended the men's doubles title, as they defeated Richard Gordon and Jeffrey Brown for the second straight year.

However, Clarke failed to defend his singles title, as he was beaten 21-18, 21-14 by Stephen Kitchen.

In the lone Veteran's (50+ years) clash, Dalton Reid and Andrew Rust defeated Warren Nelson and Delsang Lue-Taim 21-18, 21-16.

Douglas and Ryan Dyer took the Parent and Child event with a 21-19, 21-19 win over Courtney and Gareth Henry.

The presentation of awards for both the junior and senior championships, as well as this year's Junior Classic tournament, will take place at Club India, 38 Lady Musgrave Road tomorrow, starting at 7 p.m.
