Two Jamaicans in Windies' women's senior team

TWO JAMAICAN players were yesterday named to represent the West Indies senior women's cricket team for their upcoming tours of Pakistan and Sri Lanka. They are Eltham High's Stafanie Taylor and former Dunoon Technical student Shanel Daley.

The duo, who will depart the Caribbean on October 12 for the October 14 start of the tours in Pakistan, are part of a 14-woman contingent that was named by the WICB, and includes four Trinidadian and three Barbadian representatives.

Another Jamaican, Chadean Nation, who was vice-captain of the West Indies tour on their recent tour of the Netherlands, Ireland and England, did not make the team.

Premier batter

Taylor, a stroke-playing opener, is regarded as the region's premier batter, having stamped her class during the team's recent tour of Europe and the just-concluded regional senior women's tournament in St Lucia.

In Europe, Taylor netted several big half-centuries, while at the regional senior women's tournament she scored two brilliant undefeated centuries, which guided Jamaica to championship.

Daley is the daughter of former national cricketer Aaron Daley. At the regional tournament, she was a standout with bat and ball and as such has been duly rewarded.

Activities

The West Indies team leaves for London on October 12. The team will then travel on to Pakistan on October 14 and finally to Sri Lanka on November 18. In the two latter countries, the team will play ODI and Twenty/20 matches.

These activities form a significant part of preparations for the selection of the final team for the 2009 Women's World Cup in Australia.
