George's edge KC 2-1 to lift 2008 Roper Cup

St George's College warmed up for the Manning Cup competition by beating North Street rivals Kingston College (KC) 2-1 to capture the Roper Cup at Emmett Park on Saturday.

However, KC and St George's will share the George Thompson Trophy after the Under-14 and Under-16 matches ended in 2-2 draws.St George's College won the Pancho Rankine Trophy by beating KC 1-0 in the over-35 game.

In the battle of the Manning Cup sides, Kemal Malcolm scored both goals for St George's College in the seventh and 80th minutes. Former national Under-17 representative McCauley Tulloch scored for KC in the 36th.

Good fight

Marcell Gayle, assistant coach of St George's College, said his team still has a few areas that they needed to work on before the start of the Manning Cup competition.

"However, I thought my players put up a good fight because they showed a lot of courage and determination throughout the match," Gayle noted.

Wayne Fairclough, coach of KC, said despite his team's defeat, he was pleased with their efforts.

"I think it was an excellent performance from my team because we created a number of chances from which we should have scored," said Fairclough.

"We are hoping to have a good season in this year's Manning Cup competition because I think that we have a formidable team," Fairclough added.
