Portmore cricket gets $400,000 injection

Nestl? Jamaica Limited, through its Milo brand, has pumped $400,000 into the Portmore Metropolitan Under-15 Cricket League.

The announcement was made by Suzanne Wilson Wong, Nestl? Jamaica Limited's category channel sales and development manager.

Wilson Wong handed over a cheque to Charles Simpson, president of the Portmore Metropolitan Cricket League (PMCL), at the opening ceremony and uniform parade at the Bridgeport sports ground on Sunday. The sponsorship money is $50,000 more than last year.

Satisfaction

Wilson Wong expressed satisfaction with the growth of the league over the years and gave gift baskets to three players from the league, who have represented Jamaica at the Under-15 level.

They were national wicketkeeper Amadria Morris (Colours International), Delbert Gayle (Portsmouth) and Ramone Senior (champions Waterford). She said that with the current development of the league, Milo had no hesitation in sponsoring the league for the fourth consecutive season.

Christeen Cummings, whose name the championship trophy is in honour of, gave encouraging words to the youngsters while Milton Henry, secretary of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA), expressed his satisfaction with the league.

Meanwhile, Simpson thanked Milo for its dedication and sponsorship of the league.

Portland cricket

Action in the West Portland Senior Cricket League continues tomorrow with 10 matches.

Oneaissance 105 for eight (Gervin Gibson 21; Maurice Daley 3-21) lost to Kensington, 107 for one in nine overs (Mahajun Francis 43 not out), by nine wickets.

Balcares 89 from 17 overs (Carl Brissett 2-4) lost to Portland Masters 92 for two wickets.

Naggo Head, Portmore Utd in feature match

Former champions Naggo Head and Portmore United lock horns in the feature match of the Pines Imaging Centre Portmore Under-17 Football League tomorrow at the Naggo Head playing field, kick-off time is 3:30 p.m.

The Naggo Head/Portmore United clash is one of eight games on in the league.

In the opening game at Naggo Head, Caymanas Gardens Site D take on Independence City at 1:30 p.m. Rodwood and Braeton United highlight a double-header at the Portsmouth playing field, at 3:30 p.m., while in the opener at 1:30 p.m., Garveymeade and Racing United face off.

At Cumberland, Christian Pen and home team Cumberland square off at 1:30 p.m. to open proceedings while in the feature game at the venue, Wanderers tackle Portmore Gardens. At Hellshire, home team Hellshire United welcome Daytona at 1:30 p.m. in the curtain-raiser and Greater Portmore and Waterford play at 3:30 p.m.

Essex Valley squad for Norway Cup

ALPART/Essex Valley Schools Sports Council football coach Andrew Bent has named a squad of 18 Under-14 footballers to participate in the 2008 Norway Cup for world junior clubs to be held in Oslo from July 21 to August 4.

The team, drawn from Alpart's operating area communities in South St Elizabeth and South Manchester, has been invited to Norway by the alumina company's co-owner Hydro Aluminium, and the visit will be sponsored by Hydro and Alpart.

The players named are Kaneil Harrison, Ackeem Nelson, Simon Barnes, Mark Parchment, Jason McLean, Levaughan Baker, Khesanio Hall, Tafari Smith, Kaya Beckford, Raheen Jones, Toshroy Turner, Kaycee Bromfield, Luciel Banton, Enrique Rochester, Adrian Smart, Kevon Farquharson, Dunar Smith and Okeen Blanford.

They will be accompanied by coaches Andrew Bent and Clive Adams, Alpart officials Lance Neita (Manager) and Julian Keane, and Nain High School Principal Basil Bennett.

The Jamaicans will compete in the Under-14 category of the tournament which has attracted about 1,500 teams from 43 countries this year and remains the world's largest invitational junior football club competition.

Runaway Bay, Hoolebury take home main prizes

Runaway Bay and Hoolebury were rewarded after their successful Square One Supermarket and Wholesales-sponsored St Ann Primary and All-Age schools cricket seasons.

At Thursday's awards ceremony at Beverly Community Centre, both teams walked away with $25,000 and the prestigious Square One Supermarket and Wholesale Trophy.

The Most Disciplined Team award in the Primary category went to Chester for the fourth straight year. Most Disciplined Team award in the All-Age section went to champions Runaway Bay. They both got $5,000 and a trophy.

The Best All-Rounder award in the primary section went to Lyndon Gairey of champions Hoolebury and the best all-rounder in the All-Age category went to Demar Frazer of champions Runaway Bay. He was also Man of the Finals as he hit 43 not out and took 4-25.

JPS netball

The JPS/St James Intermediate Netball League finals take place this afternoon at the Montego Bay Cricket Club netball courts starting at 4:00 p.m.

Favourites and unbeaten Twelve Stars from Bethel Town will go up against Destiny out of Flankers. The Dwight Morris-coached Twelve Stars will look to preseason leading goalscorer Qulia McPherson (GA), Natoya Virgo (GS) and last season's MVP and captain Antoinette 'Sweets' Reid (GD) to lead them, while the Phillip Spence-coached Destiny will be banking on the ever-improving Keron 'Munchie' Simpson (GS), Tiffany 'C' Campbell (GA), Kacey Erskine (GD) and Antoinette Donaldson (GK).

In the curtain-raiser at 3 p.m., Pacers B will battle for third place with Starlight B.

Black River are champs

Black River United are the 2007-2008 St Elizabeth Wray and Nephew Major League champions despite drawing 0-0 with Parottee United last Sunday at Appleton Estate Sports Complex.

However, Black River , who took a 2-1 lead into the tie, were aggregate winners.

Timothy Haywood's double strike in the 25th and 50th minutes in first leg did it for Black River, while Michael Rowe netted for the losers.

The champions took home $150,000 and will join Tafari Lions to represent the parish in the South Central Super League next season. The runners-up took home $80,000.
