Simmonds tops Open Series surf

Keisha Hill, Staff Reporter

Last year's national under-18 champion, Shane Simmonds, won the third event of the Jamaica Surfing Association's (JSA) 2008 National Open Series held at the Copa Surfing Beach, Bull Bay on the weekend.

Thirty-one surfers from across the island registered for the men's division of the event. After four rounds of competition five surfers lined up for the final heat. When the waves calmed, Simmonds came out on top with 1,000 points, followed by Icah Wilmot (860) in second place and Luke Williams (730) in third.

In the women's event Danielle O'Hayon (1,000) put on an exciting display of surfing and took the National Open champion's title ahead of Imani Wilmot (860) and Elim Beckford (730).

The next event in the JSA's 2008 open series will be the 2008 National Junior Championship to be held on Saturday, July 5 at the Makka Surfing Beach, Yallahs, St Thomas, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
