St Andrew raiders United rule indoors

Keisha Hill, Staff Reporter

Two new champions were crowned on the final day of the four-day UWI Mona Indoor Hockey Tournament held at the National Indoor Sports Centre on Sunday.

In the ladies club section, St. Andrew 'A' dethroned Tropics 3-0 with goals from Audrey Gaynor, Tasha Cooke and Sofia Cooper to take home the coveted female club title.

In the third play-off, St. Andrew 'B' defeated Sharpes 3-0 with a hat-trick of early goals from Dr. Michelle Holt.

In the men's club play-off, Circus Circle avenged their preliminary round loss, defeating Sharpes 4-1. Aubyn Ferguson and Sherman Brown each netted a brace for Circus Circle, while George McGlashen converted from the penalty spot for Sharpes' consolation goal.

Beating the invasion

Raiders United retained the men's club title, beating off the Barbadian invasion from Cave Hill, which succumbed 2-4.

Gerald Richards was on fire as he converted all four of Raiders' goals. Cave Hill, on the other hand, wasted numerous chances as they opened up the Raiders defence and were denied from scoring by goalkeeper Dane Lewin.

In the final of the schoolgirls section, St. Andrew High thrashed last year's winners Wolmer's 6-0. Racine Johnson scored a hat-trick, while Dr. Holt's daughter, Demi Nicholson, Tajean Bailey and Stephanie Channer completed the scoring.

UWI surprised Cave Hill in the tertiary finals with a 2-1 victory to avenge their 1-3 loss in the preliminary round.

However, UTech had no such luck and were again beaten by Cave Hill, 4-1 for the male tertiary championship title.

In the third-place play-off for tertiary teams, G.C. Foster suffered heavy losses with the women going down 11-0 to UTech and their male counterparts 6-0 to UWI.

Earned titles

St. Andrew High's Racine Johnson copped the Most Valuable Player (MVP) title in the schoolgirls section, while Shakeela Elliott of UWI, Mona, earned the female tertiary equivalent and Tropics' Nicole Grant did likewise in the club category.

In the men's section, Ryan Davis of UWI, Cave Hill, was the awarded the MVP award, while Dane Lewin of Raiders United was voted as MVP for the club section. The most disciplined team award went to Cave Hill's men.
