Inter bank football awards

The 2007 JN Money Transfer/ Western Sports Inter bank football competition's awards ceremony was held recently at the Bank of Jamaica, Nethersole Place.

BoJ defeated BNS 1-0 to win the Bankers Association Trophy in the five-a-side rally while NCB won the Norman Goodison Trophy for the fifth time when they stopped BoJ 2-0 in the league final.

BNS won the most disciplined team award for the second straight year.

BH cricket final

The final of the Reggae Jammin Foods 50-over league will be played on December 30.

Defending champions Cable & Wireless are set to meet St. Ann Bauxite in the final at Port Esquivel. The showdown is set to start at 10:00 a.m.

Cornwall on the double

Cornwall College were double winners over Maldon High in recent action from the KFC/Pepsi Western High Schools basketball competition.

In the senior section (Under-19s), Cornwall College came away 64-30 winners. Gavin Brown (23 pts, 3 rebs, 2 assts, 3 stls), Jhun Brian (10 pts, 6 stls, 2 blks) and Peter Reid (9 pts, 5 rebs, 6 stls) led the way for the winners.

Maldon High's top players were Jasel Simpson (7 pts, 3 rebs) and Raman McGhee (7 pts).

In the Under-16 section, Cornwall College won the contest 75-55.

Ricardo Greaves (14 pts, 15 rebs, 2 assts, 2 stls, 2 blks), Tevin Brown (13pts) and O'Brian Shrives (11 pts, 6 rebs, 2 stls) were the top players.

For the losers, Daniel Phipps had 23 points and eight rebounds while Kerome Stewart (8 pts, 3 rebs) and Garon Fairclough (11 pts, 6 rebs, 2 assts, 2 stls) supported.

Brooks, Holness score centuries

Kemar Brooks scored a century to lead Morningside to an easy four-wicket victory over Lititz Southridge in the South St. Elizabeth NCB competition.

Morningside made 304 for six off 30 overs with Brooks getting 104, Gary Bent 68 and Damion Foster 52 against Jason Walters 3-21.

In reply, Lititz Southridge were dismissed for 157 in 20 overs. Courtney Witter got 60 against Sheldon Edwards 4-25 and Gary Graham 2-20.

In other recent matches, Ridge United 102 in 28 overs (Kervin Cavonna 30, Dwight Dyer 28; Tyrone Vassel 3-27, Oniel Parchment 3-12) lost to Southside 104 in 14.3 overs (Matthew Davidson 62).

Pitterson defeats Grandmaster

It was high drama at the Jamaica Conference Centre on the weekend when National Master and three-time national champion Jomo Pitterson defied the odds to defeat Jamaican-born International Grandmaster Maurice Ashley in the last round of the JMMB/Burger King Frederick Cameron Chess Open to take the top honours.

Pitterson entered the final round on 4.5 points, half a point behind Ashley, who had defeated his previous five opponents to be on a perfect five points from five games.

Pitterson faced a must-win situation with the black pieces if he was to take the top prize, while Ashley needed only a draw.

The JMMB/Burger King Frederick Cameron Chess Open, which was organised by Magnificent Chess Limited under the auspices of the Jamaica Chess Federation (JCF), was the biggest tournament in the history of Jamaican chess with a turnout of more than 200 competitors.

The field included 10 of Jamaica's 11 active National Masters, two FIDE Masters and Grandmaster Ashley, who was a guest of the Magnificent Chess Limited. .

UTech beat Windalco

Hosts UTech defeated Windalco Kirkvine Sports Club II 3-1 in a lone Division Two rescheduled match played this week at the UTech Auditorium as the JTTA/Northwest Development National Table Tennis Club League continued.

The victory took UTech to eight points in Group One, behind runaway leaders Cable & Wireless, who are on 15 points, and ahead of newcomers Hy-Performance (five) and Windalco Kirkvine Sports Club II (four). The top two teams from this group at the end of the preliminary rounds will advance to semi-finals along with the top two teams from Group Two.

In individual results, Michael Cai won two matches for UTech, outlasting Peter Kavanaugh 3-2 (16-14, 6-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-6) and crushing Godfrey Dennis 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-7). Kareem Flowers and Tyrone Gordon trounced Peter Kavanaugh and Dennis 3-0 (11-6, 11-4, 11-6) in doubles to secure the third triumph for UTech, as Everette Kavanaugh turned back Flowers 3-1 (11-6, 5-11, 11-6, 11-5) to pull one back for Windalco Kirkvine Sports Club II.

Watson Grove, Racing United to battle

Leaders Watson Grove FC travel to Ironside tomorrow to battle home team Racing United in a key match in the WIHCON-sponsored Portmore Football League. Match time is 3:30 p.m.

Watson Grove are joint leaders of the competition alongside Portsmouth with nine points, while Greater Portmore and Daytona trail in joint third spot on seven points.

Watson Grove and Racing United (four) are coming off wins in their most recent games.

Watson Grove clipped Caymanas 1-0 and Racing United edged Braeton United 2-1 in a battle of demoted teams.

In other games last Sunday, Daytona beat Braeton Newtown 3-1, Greater Portmore were held 0-0 by Portmore Pines while Hellshire United and Caymanas Gardens Site D also ended goalless.
