Becca Cup decider

Former champs Portsmouth CC and red hot Ken's Wildflower will tomorrow fight for the Tony Becca Cup in the final of the Petcom Portmore Metropolitan Cricket League at the Bridgeport Sports Ground; match time is 10:00 a.m.

In last week's semi-final, Ken's Wildflower easily disposed of Belmont Park by five wickets.

Belmont batted first and made 83 all out with David Morgan (21) and Ricardo Ennis (17) making most runs against the bowling of Marlon Hoilette who bagged 6-29 in seven overs. Ennis received good support from Donald Bredwood who captured 2-5. Ken's Wildflower in reply made 86 for five with Lloyd Rattray making a top score of 29, against the bowling of Devon Brown (2-14) and David Moore (2-37).

In the other semi-final, defending champs Waterford slumped to a two-wicket defeat to Portsmouth, significantly because the former was charged 60 penalty runs for a late start. Waterford took first strike and made 181 all out with Courtney Elliot top scoring with 65 and Ramone Senior chipping in with 40.

Raymond Brown (3-15) and Gerald Laing (3-31) were the chief wicket takers.

Portsmouth held on to win at 122 for eight, with Hugh Hinds scoring 33 not out and Roland Henry getting 28. Dwight Williams (2-12) and Richard Johnson (2-16) shared four wickets.

Track meet at GC Foster

St. Catherine High School will host its first development track and field meet today at the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education beginning at 9:00 a.m.

The meet is being held under the patronage of Joan Tyser Mills, current principal of the school, and replaces the track meet usually held by Excelsior at this time of year.

This is the first official competitive test for athletes in the 150m, 300m, 600m, 1,000m and 4x300m relay, while two field events, the long jump and high jump, will also be on the agenda.

Schools expected to participate include Wolmer's Girls, Immaculate, St. Jago, Bridgeport High, Tacius Golding High, McGrath High, Spanish Town High and Glengoffe High.

Meet organiser Millard Dunbar is also making his debut and is currently the manager for the school's athletics programme, while Immaculate High School coach Mark Prince will serve as meet director.

Mystix pool tourney this weekend

The second Mystix Sports Bar eight-ball double elimination pool tournament takes place this afternoon and tomorrow at Mystix, 78 3/4 Hagley Park Road, starting at 5:00 p.m. on both days. The tournament is open to A-, B- and C-class players. A-class players must win four games; B-class, three games and C-class, two games. A cash prize of $50,000 and trophy will go to the winner. There will be $20,000 for second, $10,000 for third and $5,000 to the player finishing fourth. Cash incentives of $2,500 each will be paid to players finishing from fifth to eighth place. Entry fee is $2,000 if paid before today, while it will be $2,500 from today. Entries will be drawn at 4:30 p.m. today. Eight nine-foot tables will be used. Meanwhile, the two-day Auto Craze tournament confined to B-class players is scheduled for next weekend at the Auto Craze Sports Bar, 12 Dunrobin Avenue. The winner will receive $25,000; second, $10,000 and third, $5,000. Entry fee is $1,000 per player, $700 re-entry.

Oracabessa, Goshen in semis

Oracabessa Primary and Goshen Primary solidified their chances of gaining a hold on the coveted James Bond Beach Primary Schools football title with wins in their quarter-final encounters at the James Bond Beach complex on Wednesday.

Oracabessa Primary came away with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Mason Hall Primary.

Oracabessa took the lead in the sixth minute with a well-taken shot by Akeem Rhoden from the penalty spot.

The lead was doubled in the 21st minute when Rajae Silvera beat the advancing Mason Hall keeper with a well-judged lob over his head.

Mason Hall pegged one back when they scored from a mix up with Oracabessa defenders and the goalkeeper. The goal was scored in the 25th minute by Omar Kidd.

The Mason Hall goal lifted their tempo as the team tried desperately to get on level terms with numerous attacks at the opposition.

Mason Hall were, however, shaken up as, against the run of play, Oracabessa Primary's leading scorer, Christian Speare, broke away in the 34th minute and shot past a helpless looking Jamie Powell in goal for Mason Hall.

Kidd completed a brace, scoring in the 42nd minute, but Mason Hall Primary were held at bay until the final whistle giving Oracabessa a 3-2 scoreline.

In the other game, Goshen Primary edged out Donnington Primary 1-0. The goal was scored by Akeem Darby on the stroke of full time from a 20-yard shot.

Netball semis for Mason, Goshen

Defending champions Goshen Primary and Mason Hall Primary booked their places in next week's netball semi-finals with wins in Wednesday's quarter-final matches.

The absence of the league's leading goal shooter from the Donnington Primary line-up made a great impact on the team as its unbeaten run was ended by Mason Hall Primary, 8-4.

The other unbeaten netball team left in the league, Goshen Primary, blanked Oracabessa 14-0 to book their spot in next week's semis.

C&W beat Windalco

Former champions Cable & Wireless edged hosts Windalco Kirkvine Sports Club II 3-2 in a lone Division Two match from the JTTA/Northwest Development National Table Tennis Club League on Tuesday night at the Ingleside Wellness and Recreation Centre.

The victory stretched the lead of Cable & Wireless atop Group One standings to 15 points, ahead of UTech and newcomers Hy-Performance (five points each) and Windalco Kirkvine Sports Club II (three).

The top two teams at the end of the preliminary rounds will qualify for semi-finals to be played along with all other play-off matches on January 26.

The league continues this afternoon with a doubleheader of Division One matches at Hy-Performance Club, Hope Pastures. Hy-Performance will oppose defending champions JDF, and UWI will face Cable & Wireless, both matches beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Cedar Valley are champs

Cedar Valley Primary created a major upset in the final of the INSPORTS St. Catherine Primary netball competition by ousting previously unbeaten Friendship Primary 18-16 in what was an enthralling final at G.C. Foster College on Wednesday.

It was Cedar Valley's first hold on the title.

Friendship came into the final as hot favourites because they had breezed through the competition without dropping a point. In addition, they had whipped Cedar Valley 22-7 in the quarter-final round.

Cedar Valley had earlier beaten Greater Portmore 22-21 in over-time (15-15 regulation time) in the semis to book their spot in the final, while Friendship beat defending champs Ginger Ridge 15-10 in the other semi-final.

Shoot-out for SUV

There will be an All-star game, dunk-off and three-point contest on December 22 at the National Stadium courts. Each National Basketball League (NBL) team can enter one person for each event.

One lucky person will shoot for a 2007 SUV. There will be a Christmas party for all NBL teams after the event.
