Hellshire United, Westchester clash

Hellshire United and Westchester will clash today in a Portmore Netball Association (PNA) semi-final with the winner earning a final date with Ken's Wildflower. The game is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, Ken's Wildflower advanced to their second final of the season last Sunday by beating Bridgeport United 'A' 32-16. The final is scheduled for Sunday, November 11.

MultiCare sports days coming up

The MultiCare sports programme is set to move into high gear with the annual series of MultiCare Foundation Inter-Schools Sports competitions coming up.

Slated for November 14 and 15 are the MultiCare Inter-Schools volleyball (mixed) football (boys) competitions.

The MultiCare Inter-Schools netball competition will be held on November 20 and 21.

Coaching is already under way for the zonal competitions in participating schools. All three competitions are open to students from the 31 MultiCare-assisted schools in east, west and central Kingston and Greater Portmore.

Waterford, Hamilton Gardens in key battle

Defending champions Waterford CC and Hamilton Gardens will do battle at the Hamilton Gardens cricket ground in a feature Group B game as the second round of the Petcom Portmore Metropolitan Cricket League bowls off today.

The Waterford, Hamilton Gardens fixture is one of four scheduled games.

In another Group B match, Belmont Park play Mega Mart Developmental squad, while over in Group A, Ken's Wildflower battle leaders Portsmouth at the Portsmouth ground and Reid's Pen and Washington CC will do battle at the Bridgeport sports ground.

All games begin at 11 a.m

Meanwhile, Waterford and Portsmouth shared the Charles Simpson Cup after rain ruined the final at the Bridgeport ground last Sunday. Only 23 overs were possible. Waterford were 106 for four when play was called off because of heavy rains.

Badminton Champs serve off Friday

The bmobile All-Jamaica Senior Badminton Championships will serve off next weekend at the Constant Spring Golf Club's racquet complex.

The three-day championships, which are set to start on Friday, will see all five titles - male and female singles and doubles and mixed doubles up for grabs. In addition, there will be the Masters events and the novelty events - parent and child, plus husband and wife.

Charles Pyne has indicated that he will be coming home for these championships. Pyne and V.J. Tolan are the defending men's doubles champions.

Nigella Saunders was a triple crown winner last year as in addition to her singles win she took the doubles with Alya Lewis and the mixed doubles with Bradley Graham.

Graham took a double as he was also the men's singles winner. It is not known at this time if any of them will be defending their titles. Defending champions will be given a free entry. (For doubles it must be the same partnership).

Mico thrash Norman Gardens 41-2

Action in the Institute of Sports Junior High School Girls Senior League Netball Competition got under way at the Leila Robinson Courts on Wednesday, with defending champions Mico Practising, thrashing Norman Gardens 41-2.

Mico held a comfortable 21-0 lead at half-time.

The defending champions, who took control of the match from the first quarter, raced to a 21-0 lead at the half-time break. The winners however, went on scoring spree as they netted an additional 23 goals in the fourth quarter to win easily.

Meanwhile, former many-time champions John Mills also began on a wining note with a 27-7 win over Cockburn Gardens after leading 14-4 at half-time.

Also scoring good wins were Constant Spring, who defeated Windward Road 19-8, and Central Branch, who got the better of Brandon Hill 19-14.

In other matches, John Mills 27 Cockburn Gardens 7, Melrose 10 Seaward 9, Constant Spring 19 Windward Road 8, Central Branch 19 Brandon Hill 14, Gordon Town 7 Shortwood 7, Swallowfield 10 Castleton 3, Mico Practising 10 Gordon Town 7, Melrose 2 Rock Hall 1 and Constant Spring 12 Seaward 11.

Waterford Primary set to defend crown

Reigning champions, Waterford Primary School, will, on Tuesday, begin the defence of their Institute of Sports St. Catherine primary football crown when they take on Portmore Missionary Prep in the opening match at Spanish Town Prison Oval. Kick-off time 10:00 a.m.

The competition will officially get under way at 9:00 a.m. with an opening ceremony and a uniform parade. The feature game will see defending Under-15 champions Braeton Primary and Junior High against Linstead in a repeat of last year's final.

About 30 primary and six junior high schools have confirmed their participation in the competition.

Foster leads Pembroke Hall to victory

In a clash of former champions, Pembroke Hall blanked hosts University of the West Indis (UWI) 3-0 in the first women's match of the season in the JTTA/Northwest Development national table tennis club league played on Wednesday.

The match, which was played in the Students' Union Hall at UWI, saw national champion Yvonne Foster beat Janelle Morris 11-9, 11-6, 9-11, 11-4 and former national champion Kaydian Carney overpower Charlene Chin-See 13-11, 12-10, 11-6 in singles matches.

Foster and Andrene Hart then crushed Chin-See and Rashelle Powell 12-10, 11-5 in doubles to complete the 3-0 triumph for Pembroke Hall.

In men's action, former champions Cable & Wireless edged hosts UTech 3-2 in a Division Two match inside UTech auditorium on Tuesday night.

College basketball in high gear

The Burger King/Intercollegiate Basketball Championship is in high gear with five institutions challenging for the Burger King Trophy and attractive incentives.

The league has been heavily affected by rain but some adjustments have been made to get back on track.

At present, G.C. Foster College are leading the tables as the only undefeated team in the competition. They have six points from three games, the same as Portmore Community College and Mico University College, who have both played a game more.

University of West Indies are in fourth place with five points, while Moneague and Excelsior (four each) and University of Technology (UTech) on one, are the other teams in the competition.
