Powell's Hampshire badly beaten by Surrey

SOUTHAMPTON, England (CMC)

West Indies pacer Daren Powell produced a late-order flourish with the bat but Hampshire still crashed to a heavy innings defeat to Surrey in their English County Champion-ship Division One match yesterday.

Following on 335 runs behind, Hampshire were bowled out for 298 midway the final session as visiting Surrey ran out winners by an innings and 37 runs.

Surrey were made to work hard, but eventually completed the huge victory.

On 121 for three overnight, Hampshire lost the 26-year-old left-hander James Adams quickly as he failed to add to his overnight score of 31 but Hampshire resisted well for long periods.

Nic Pothas made 92, Powell stroked 25 off 38 balls with four boundaries, and James Bruce hit 31.

Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh led Surrey's bowling with four for 71 off 38 overs and Chris Schofield bagged three for 87.

Barbadian 18-year-old pacer Christopher Jordan picked up one for 50 off 17 overs.

Batting first, Surrey had scored 556 all out with hundreds from veterans Mark Ramprakash (188) and Mark Butcher (100).

Powell was the chief wicket-taker for Hampshire with three for 117 off 32 overs.

In reply, Hampshire scored 221 all out with Adams getting 110 as Schofield (5-52) led the bowling.
