Lalors win family polo tourney

Led by five goals from captain Paul Lalor, the Lalors defeated the Chins No. 2 team 7-3 in the Hi-Pro/ICWI low-goal family polo tournament at the St. Ann Polo Club, Drax Hall, on Saturday afternoon.

Lalor asserted his authority from early in the match with three goals in the first chukka, his team taking a 3-0 lead. As the game progressed, he flicked in two more while Jason Wates and his cousin Sam Wates scored one each to seal the issue.

Despite the easy win, it was a fast-paced game with some good clean competition.

Lalor, however, made a big difference with good horsemanship and some acccurate flicking.

Scoring for the Chins No. 2 team were Kurt Chin (two) and his brother Shane (one). Kurt scored the goal of the day, hitting a lofty drive from way out on the left sideline, much to the delight of the appreciative crowd.

Representing the ICWI Lalor team were the tournament's MVP, Paul Lalor, his father Dennis, along with Jason and Sam Wates.

The consolation final earlier in the afternoon was won by the Fong-Yees. They defeated the Vernons 6-4, thanks to three goals each from Leslie Ann Fong-Yee and John G. Byles. Andy Vernon scored two for the losers while his brother Ramon and Justin Samuda got one each.

The Lalors will now turn their attention to the Hi-Pro/ICWI high- goal family tournament, which gets under way on Thursday afternoon at Drax Hall with four participating teams - Lalors, Wates and the Chins No. 1 and No. 2 teams.
