UWI Games begin today

THE 2007 University of West Indies (UWI) Games bowl off this morning with hosts Mona and Cave Hill the first to take to the Mona Bowl field at 9:00 a.m.

Also on today at the Games, sponsored by The Gleaner, Pegasus, Colgate, Cooyah, Supreme Ventures, Gatorade, Island, RJR, Tru Juice, Sports Gear and Island Car Rental, will be hockey, table tennis, tennis, football, netball, basketball and volleyball.

In hockey match, Mona men take on St. Augustine, while in women's action, St. Augustine's face Cave Hill.

Both matches are set for Mona hockey field starting at 10:00 a.m.

St. Augustine face Cave Hill in table tennis and tennis at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at the Student's Union and Mona Visitors Lounge respectively.

At 4:00 p.m., Mona and Cave Hill will take to the football field while St. Augustine and Cave Hill face off on the netball court at 5:00 p.m. Both events are at the Mona Bowl.

The basketball showdown between Mona and St. Augustine is set for the Mona Indoor Gym at 7:00 p.m. and that is the same venue for the volleyball match between Cave Hill and St. Augustine at 8:00 p.m.

Grace Jackson, student service manager for sports and games, said everything was in place for a "perfect start".

"The facilities are ready. I don't think we should have any challenges," Jackson said.

As for the competition, Jackson, an Olympic 200m silver medallist, said the athletes "are well prepared".

"The athletes are ready, excited and raring to go," she said.
