'Black Sunday' in domino league

By Orville Clarke, Portmore Star Writer

It was 'Black Sunday' in the CTL-sponsored Portmore/St. Catherine domino league last Sunday, as for the first time in the 15-year history of the competition, all four Division I quarter-final matches resulted in upsets.

The biggest was reserved for the high-riding Caribbean Classic who bushed a 32-point lead in the first half and lost in the wickedest way (by two points) to Right Stuff.

Unbeaten in 21 matches in the preliminary round, the team from Portmore Lane surprisingly went down to Right Stuff in a cliff-hanger at Eagle View Domino Club, Old Braeton. Right Stuff pipped 'Classic' 300-298 in an exciting countdown, effectively knocking them out of the competition. And if that wasn't enough, last year's beaten finalists Fort International (second in the preliminary round) were surprised by Eradication in another intense countdown at Hurricane Domino Club in Dunbeholden, losing 300-297.

In the third Division I quarter-final, Hurricane blew away defending champions St. Joseph 300-288 at Eradication, Gregory Park, while Night Shift beat Eagle View 300-278 in the fourth quarter-final at Garveymeade Sports Club.

Tomorrow's semi-final matches pits Right Stuff against Hurricane at Fort International, Passagefort and Eradication against Night Shift at Caribbean Classic, Portmore Lane.

In the Division II quarter-finals, also played last Sunday, Marleymount drubbed Frazer's Whip 300-248, ISCF beat Masterpiece 300-278, Garveymeade also stopped JUTC 300-278 and Black Rooster got by Correctional Services 300-286.

In tomorrow's semis, Marleymount will play Black Rooster at Garveymeade Sports Club, while Graveymeade take on ISCF at Right Stuff, Cedar Grove Road. All matches commence at 11:30 a.m.

The finals in both divisions are scheduled for Sunday, May 6 at Caymanas Park.
