St Ann topple Kingston

ST. ANN retained the Red Stripe Jamaica Polo Association High Goal Senior Cup title when they defeated favourites Kingston 9-7 in the final before a large crowd at the St Ann Polo Club on Saturday.

St. Ann also won the Junior Cup title with a come from behind 7-6 win over Kingston.

In the Senior Cup game, Jamaica's youth captain, Kirt Chin, was the main man on target, scoring six goals for St. Ann, assisted with a double strike from Troy Brennan and one goal from national senior midfielder Andy Vernon.

Zander Melville led the scoring for Kingston with three goals, while there were two goals each from national defender Paul Lalor and national striker Mark Wates.

UNDER PRESSURE

Kingston started out playing very well and had St. Ann under pressure from very early. They took a 3-1 lead and by the end of the third chukka they were still leading, by four goals to two.

St. Ann found their rhythm in the fourth chukka and began to apply pressure on their opponents with Troy Brennan scoring to make it 4-3. Kirt Chin levelled the score 4-4 by unleashing a spectacular shot off his malet.

St. Ann kept up the pressure on Kingston and eventually surged into a 5-4 lead courtesy of a brilliant backhand shot from Brennan.

Kingston got an opportunity to equalise when they were awarded a penalty but Mark Wates' shot went wide of the target.

As the game progressed, Kingston began to show signs of tiredness and conceded five goals in one chukka to allow the St. Ann team to retain the title.
