Taylor hands H View second title this season
By Howard Walker, Staff Reporter
Harbour View captured the Western Union/KSAFA Jackie Bell Knockout title with a 1-0 win over Boys' Town at the National Stadium last night.
National striker Fabian Taylor tapped home in the 48th minute after Boys' Town's goalkeeper Kirk Porter failed to hold on to a fierce drive from Richard Edwards.
Harbour View, having captured the First End-of-Round Final, are on course for at least three other titles. They are in the final of the Second End-of-Round final and the quarter-final of the all-island Red Stripe Champions Cup Knockout.
Winning coach Lenworth Hyde said he was just dealing with the titles one at a time.
"We needed this one and we need to win games to keep the momentum going for the rest of the league. But I am pleased with the performance," said Hyde.
The 'Stars of the East', in capturing their third lien on the trophy, walked away with $350,000 winning prize. They also won in 1996 and 2000.
Boys' Town were not left empty-handed, pocketing $200,000, while Waterhouse earned $100,000 for third, courtesy of losing to the winner in the semi-final. Tivoli Gardens gained $50,000 for fourth.
The KSAFA Jackie Bell is in its 18th season (third with Western Union as title sponsor), having started in 1987 in honour of the late football icon Winthrope 'Jackie' Bell, who died in a car accident along with Dennis Ziaidie while attending the 1986 World Cup Finals in Mexico.
No epic battle
The Boys' Town/Harbour View finals did not live up to expectations, and the epic battles that both teams had in the past never materialised.
The yellow and blue-clad Harbour View took control from early and it was not surprising when they took the lead.
Harbour View's diminutive midfielder, Richard Edwards, collected a ball wide on the right and fired a torrid shot but goalkeeper Kirk Porter failed to gather and Taylor was quickest to the rebound to tap home.
The 'Red Brigade' had enough time to fight back, but their attacking trio of Denzil Watson, George Vernal and Michael Campbell lacked support and was easily contained by the Harbour View defence.
Boys' Town rang the changes, bringing on Garfield Gillespie, the speedy Peter Keyes and Alberto Fray but the loudest cheer went up for Harbour View's maestro Jermaine Hue.
The talented midfielder was making his local debut for the season and immediately he created at least three chances for Harbour View to put away the game.
But luckily for Boys' Town, Kavin Bryan and Fabian Taylor both missed the opportunities.
Boys' Town assistant coach Perry Bartley said his team "played to the script but gave away an easy goal. Harbour View took charge of that opportunity."
