Stunters, drivers burn up New Kingston
Seventeen-year-old Kyle Greg sped to victory as the 'Ultimate Driver' at the inaugural staging of the Red Bull Smokin' Streets on Sunday and will travel to Brazil for the Formula One Circuit on October 22 to represent Jamaica.
A mass of excited fans of all ages filled Knutsford Boulevard to take in the action of go-kart racing, skydiving and bike stunts.
Spectators had their eyes glued to the road, which was turned into a multi-curve speedway for the all-day event. Races in the Can (kids), Shifter (teenager) and Rotax (adult) classes saw over 50 drivers competing and dazzling the crowd.
The level of adrenaline was kept high even during the race breaks with stunt performances from the Crazy Bikers, the Crash Test Dummies and the Red Bull Airforce. The Crazy Bikers 'wheelied' and burned rubber to roaring cheers on high-powered motorcycles, while the Crash Test Dummies delivered daring jumps and spins on their bicycles.
The highlight of the stunt showcase, however, was the Red Bull Air Force, a team of three skydivers from the United States. These daredevils have 15 years experience and made it look effortless as they 'wowed' the crowd with their aerial tricks which landed them on the race-track, just feet away from the awe-struck spectators.
Winners
Winners in the different classes were as follows: In the Kids Kart Races, Colin Daley Jr. won the light and Jared Wright won the heavy division. The teenagers were headed by Sean Jackson in the Rotax Junior Division. Among the older racers, Sebastian Rae won the Shifter class and Jackson won the Rotax Masters' class (a dual winner, as both his age and his weight allowed him entry in both categories). The final two races were the real nail-biters.The 'Best of the Rest' race featured a variety of drivers from previous Rotax Events of the day. This title was won by Jonathon Fong-Yee.
The climatic Rotax Final, to see who was the 'Ultimate Driver' featured the 13 best drivers for the day: Jackson, Natasha Chang, Shaun Moore, Steven Pitt, Brian Fong-Yee, Dominic Moore, Martin Anderson, Timothy Stewart, Justin Wong, Ornella Lea Hong, Matthew Mair, Kyle Greg and Phillip Myers.
