Guyana's Gajanand Singh lashed a fine century but fighting half-centuries from Jamie Trench-field (64) and Marlon Johnson (57) engineered a Jamaica fight back on the second day of their fourth round TCL Group West Indies Under-19 encounter at the Enmore ground yesterday.

Trenchfield fell just before the close as Jamaica, set 220 to avoid an innings defeat, were 183 for three, 37 runs away from making Guyana bat again.

Andre Creary was not out on 33 when bad light stopped play two minutes before the scheduled 5.50 p.m. close.

Earlier, an accomplished unbeaten 150 from West Indies left-hander Gajanand Singh helped Guyana to 309 for six declared 79 minutes before tea.

Facing a big first innings deficit, Jamaica started positively with Marlon Johnson and Zeniffe Fowler (16) posting 38 for the first wicket.

When Fowler departed, Johnson partnered Andre Creary (33 not out) in a 63-run second wicket stand before Johnson lofted leg-spinner Danny Narayan to Ryan Hercules at long off to leave the visitors on 101 for two.

Creary and former skipper Trenchfield joined forces to add 82 for the third wicket before Trenchfield was trapped leg before six minutes before the close.

His 64 came from 86 balls in 92 minutes and was decorated with three fours and three sixes. Guyana had earlier taken control of the game after a 50-minute delayed start due to overnight rain.

Resuming at 172 for four, Guyana extended their lead thanks to a 65-run fifth wicket partnership between Singh and Krishna Deosaran who made 35.

Unbeaten knock

It was Singh who stood out with his brilliant unbeaten century that lasted 246 balls, 305 minutes and included nine fours and a six.

AT WALES: Rain continued to scupper Barbados' quest for a spot in the final as it allowed only 26 minutes play on the second day of their fourth round encounter against the Leeward Islands. When play started at 12:40 pm after a delay caused by a soggy outfield, the Leeward Islands strode confidently to 32 without loss on winning the toss before a heavy downpour effectively ended the contest at 1:06 p.m.
