THE SEA Lion canoe from Montego Bay came away with top honours when the crew bagged a 138-pound blue marlin to lift the Magnum Tonic Wine Trophy at the 21st Port Antonio Canoe Tournament, yesterday at the Old Port Antonio Marina.

It was the second canoe tournament win in succession for the Montegonians as they were invited to Portland based on the fact that they won the Montego Bay Canoe tournament only two weeks ago.

Overall, the crew walked away with three prizes. In addition to the trophy for the heaviest marlin, they also bagged the Heaviest Non-Bill Fish award, for which they got the Digicel Trophy and a cash prize and the award for the Heaviest Tuna. According to crew member Donovan Hyman, it took a lot of hard work to finish on top.

"It was hard work but we made use of our lures and bait and I guess we were also kind of lucky," Hyman said.

Montego Bay also claimed the runner-up prize with the canoe My Toy, the second tournament in a row that Radcliffe Gayle and his crew found themselves behind Sea Lion.

SECOND PLACE

Yesterday they received the Supreme Ventures Trophy based on the fact that they weighed in with the second heaviest marlin of the day at 118 pounds.

Gayle believes it's only a matter of time before his team breaks through for a victory.

"I consider myself to be a good fisherman, I'm doing my best and I know that if I continue to work hard I will get the desired result," Gayle said.

According to the keen fisherman, this was the fourth tournament in a row that he placed in second place but he said he would continue to be patient and wait for the rewards.

The marlin tournament proper continues today.
