Jamaica's go-kart team for the United States Grand National Finals departed in high spirits yesterday for Indiana, where they will challenge over 150 drivers from Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica and the host country.

Among the representatives are Timothy Stewart, Sean Moore and Sean Jackson who will be competing in the Junior Class at the meet.

In the international segment representation will be provided by Joel Jackson, Stephen Fitt, Brian Fong Yee, Martin Anderson and Dwight Preddie.

"Preddie and Fong Yee will join us sometime next week," said Andrew Jackson, one of the team managers who will be making the trip.

Jackson, along with veteran and retired motor racing drivers, Peter Moodie Sr. and Duncan Stewart, departed with the team as part of the support crew.

Stewart has always believed that the local team has the talent to match their overseas counterparts, but everything will depend on their mental preparation.

"We are confident that they will make an impact," said Dwight Moore, president of the Jamaica Karting Association.

ja in action tomorrow

The big event is scheduled for next Friday, but the Jamaicans, including the vastly improved Dominic Moore, will be in action tomorrow when they compete in a warm-up event.

Moore, who has shrugged off a lean spell, was very prominent in the Rotax International Class during last Sunday's race meet at the Palisadoes International Raceway, Kingston.

At the last Sunday's event, three class records were established. Matthew Williams did a 43.665 seconds in the 100 cc Junior Sportsman Class, in the other segment of that class, Mario Mair completed a fast lap time of 44.198 seconds.

The fastest lap time of the day was done by Peter Moodie Jr., 38.835 seconds.
