Fort International from Passagefort humbled defending champions Caribbean Classic 300-255 in the CTL-sponsored Portmore/St Catherine domino final before a large crowd at Caymanas Park last Sunday. For their efforts, Fort secured the $130,000 prize and championship trophy, while Caribbean Classic from Portmore Lane secured $80,000 and third-place Eagle View, $50,000.
Eagle View, which topped the preliminary round of the competition before losing to Caribbean Classic in the semi-final, defeated Ackee Pod 300-289 in the third-place play-off at the same venue last Sunday. Ackee Pod picked up $30,000 for fourth.
Many anticipated a close final between five-time champions Caribbean Classic and old rivals Fort International which have been four times the bridesmaid against Classic in Portmore finals.
However, Fort dominated the first half to lead by all of 34 points and duly increased their lead over the final 100 points to win by 45. The top players for Fort were many-time national representatives Arnett 'Wonder Boy' Ramsay and Alvin 'Hardie Boy' Thomas, along with Lambert 'Diggy' Hull. Michael Jackson and Henry Adams. The team was captained by Everton Kalawan.
Presentation of trophies and prizes will take place at Caymanas Park tomorrow afternoon starting at three Twenty-two teams participated.
Last Man standingPool tournament today
Pool players from across the island will contest the Presto's Last Man Standing eight-ball pool tournament, the seventh ranking tournament of the season today and tomorrow at Mystix Sports Bar, 78 3/4 Hagley Park Road, starting at 2 p.m. each day.
Many of the island's top players are expected to compete, including Sunil 'Termite' Kissendal, MoBay's Noel 'Schoolboy' Blagrove, Roy Letts and Hot Shots' Ewart Hall, currently the top-rated player in the island by virtue of winning three ranking tournaments so far this year.
The tournament, which is open to A and B class players and is being sponsored by Sunrite, offers a first prize of $50,000 and trophy, second $20,000 and trophy, third $10,000 and fourth $6,000. Players finishing from fifth to eighth place will receive $3,000, while $5,000 will go to the top female player. Entry fee is $2,000, re-entry $1,500.
Associate sponsors are Century Wrecking Services, Fencing Associates Limited, Pakjam Motors, WSL, Doc Holliday Sports Bar and Newman Sweets.
Training course for beach volleyball referees
The NORCECA beach volleyball referee's training course continues today through tomorrow at the Mary Seacole Hall Common Room at University of the West Indies, Mona campus.
Based on the late confirmation, and limited availability of participants, it was agreed to adjust the schedule, which started on Thursday.
Today, the practical session will be held from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. Tomorrow will be review day, which is set to start at 10 a.m. and noon.
The exam will be tomorrow between 1 and 4:30 p.m.
Five-a-side football on today
The Locker Room Sports-sponsored one-day five-a-side Challenge football competition will be held today at the National Water Commission playing field, Mona.
The winning team will receive $30,00.00, while the runners-up will $15,000.00. Twenty-four teams will be participating in this year competition, which includes defending champion Tank-Weld Metals.
Kick-off time is 9 a.m.
Logwood maintain lead
On a day when it rained heavily and reduced a triple-header to two games, Logwood maintained their lead in the JPS-sponsored Hanover Open League, with a comfortable 33-14 win over Green Island Sports Club.
Sandy Bay cruised to a 24-13 win over Pythons, while the game between Trinity and Russia will be played at a later date.
Nicole Fletcher stood tall with 20 goals from 33 attempts for Logwood, while Captain Shagail Green supported with 13.
Sandy Bay's goal attack Felecia Samuels scored 17 of her team's goals and Lishauna Martin netted seven. The improving Moya Brown with nine got the goals for Pythons.
Games continue this afternoon at the Orchard Sports Complex in Hopewell with three games. At 3 p.m. Sandy Bay will host Russia, Pythons will be looking to upset Logwood at 4 p.m. and Trinity will do battle against Green Island Sports Club at 5 p.m.
Starline light up court
Starlight B lit up the court with a 32-22 win over bottom-of-table Queens in Zone B, while Lime B and Angelets played to an exciting 27-27 draw in Zone A in the JPS/St James Intermediate league netball competition.
Sandrae Vincent with 17 goals and Ashana Haynes (10) were the leading scorers for Starlight. Sashalee Gaynor led the way for the losers with 17 goals.
In the drawn game, Iobe Green had a game high 21 goals and Suzan Lee six for Lime B, while Shanille Sylvester 16, Nicole Kerr 6 and Florisha Riley 5 contributed for Angelets.
New Forest score big win
In action from the Manchester Co-operative Credit Union/INSPORTS, New Forest recorded the round's biggest margin of victories, a 37-8 spanking of Bethabara at Brooks Park Sports complex on Wednesday.
In the day's other matches, Nazareth beat Hatfield 19-10 while Harry Watch edged Woodlands 17-15.
Double wins for Corinaldo
Corinaldi enjoyed double victories over Chetwood in the latest round of matches from the Western Basketball
Association/INSPORTS Mini basketball league played at Montego Bay Boys and Girls' Club.
Corinaldi B trashed Chetwood B 24-8 while Corinaldi A defeated Chetwood A 20-9.
In other games, Barracks B beat Catherine Hall 2-0; Success A 14 stopped St Evans 14-4.
In Manchester, Villa Road crushed New Green 3-9 while Zion Hill had an easy 16-9 win over Mizpah.
Four more into netball quarter-finals
East Queen's Park, Swallowfield, UTech/Papine and Alexander Strikers moved into the quarter-finals of the INSPORTS/JN Money Transfer Community netball competition.
East Queen's Park are assured of a place in the last eight from Zone One with 18 points after defeating Delmax 29-24 in the feature match at Windward Road Primary and Junior High School last Sunday.
In the early game, Alexander Strikers cemented second position behind early Zone Two winners Flames after outclassing Rollington Town 31-17.
Swallowfield secured their spot with a 19-15 triumph over Mega Angels while UTech/Papine sealed the runners-up position behind Determine Strikes in Zone One when they whipped Mona Commons 32-13.
In other matches, Whitfield drubbed Castleton 27-6 in a resche-duled game, while walkovers and a 15-0 scoreline were awarded to Hagley Park, Selassie and Castleton over Jet Setter 'C', Mandela and Liguanea, respectively.
Church cricket presentation
The Power of Faith Ministries Twenty20 Church cricket league awards ceremony and presentation will be held this evening at the Power of Faith Ministries multi-purpose complex, starting at 4 p.m.
A representative from all seven participating churches should be in attendance. The guest speaker for the evening is councillor for the Independence City division, Councillor Keith Blake. Mayor of Portmore Keith Hinds will be giving greetings on behalf of the Portmore Municipal Council.
Meanwhile, Power of Faith Seniors won the league with a two-wicket triumph over Faith Temple New Testament two weeks ago, and in the process lifted the Dr Delford Davis trophy for Excellence for the second time in three years.
Rodwood test for Passagefort United
Passagefort United, lingering in sixth position on six points from four matches in the Senator Arthur Williams-sponsored Portmore Division Two Football League, will get a stern test from joint-second-place Rodwood in the feature match at the Passagefort playing field tomorrow, match time 3:30 p.m.
In the opening game at 1:30 p.m., winless Braeton United and Westport battle for their first points of the season.
In a double-header at the Cumberlnad playing field, Portmore Pines square off with Daytona in the curtain-raiser at 1:30 p.m., while two hours later, joint-second-place Cumberland (nine) battle fifth-place Christian Pen (nine) at the same venue. At the Hellshire playing field, leaders Watson Grove (12) are set to punish Hellshire United in a 3 p.m. kick-off. |
