Jonathan Newnham heads team for Caribbean golf championship

Jonathan Newnham and Vittoria Marley, the youngest male and female golfers to represent Jamaica at the senior level, were named on Friday to represent the island in the Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Champion-ship scheduled for July 5-10 at the Cinnamon Hill Golf Course in Montego Bay.

Newnham represented the country at the senior level at age 13 while Marley did so at age 15. Both young golfers represented Jamaica last year in the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship in Cayman, where they performed creditably.

Best showing

Nine islands across the Carib-bean will battle for top honours in Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championship. Last year, Jamaica came fourth, its best showing to date.

The Jamaican team will compete in three age groups: 13 and under, 14-15 and 16-17. The full team, including the reserves, is as follows:

Boys 13 and under: Oshane Hayer, Michael Wilmott, Dwight Moulton (reserve).

Girls 13 and under: Janielle Morris Jayda Thompson.

Boys 14 and 15: Jonathan Newnham, Ian Facey, William Knibbs, Zachary Chong (reserve).

Girls 14 and 15: Rochelle Prince, Zainab James, Cristal Gayle (reserve).

Boys 16 and 17: Geoffrey Chong, Robert Grant, Jordon Thompson, Lawrence Bailey (reserve).

Girls 16 and 17: Vittoria Marley, Shaneil McCloud.

The national trials to select the team was held April 8-9 at the Cinnamon Hill Golf Course, where Newnham topped the score, ending on 149 with 74 on day one and 75 on day two.
