Primary schools netball

Thirty-two (32) schools will compete in this year's INSPORT Primary School league, which is set to begin on January 21.

The league, which ends on February 20, will see Clan Carthy, last year's champions, trying to defend their title.

This INSPORT Primary Schools netball event is for institutions situated in Kingston and St Andrew only. The league has been running for over 17 years now and has helped shape the careers of current national captain, Simone Forbes, Kadian Mendez and Daydrian Coleman among others.

Samuels, Green, Santokie shine

Former national youth players Nicoy Samuels, Derval Green and Krishmar Santokie were the stars in last Sunday's NCB-sponsored Southeast St Elizabeth KO cricket competition.

Samuels, 103, and Derval Green, 102, scored centuries to lead Todd Town to 336 for 8 in their allotted 35 overs.

Santokie, who also represented the West Indies Under-15 team, took 6-66 in seven overs, included a hat-trick in his first over.

In reply, Morningside could only muster 168 in 35 overs. Again Santokie was the top man with 62.

Trace Powell took 5-27 and Nicoy Samuels 4-23.

All Century 178 all out in 29 overs (Yannick Elliot 65, Romaine Roye 41; Damion Ebanks 4-21, Tyrone Vassel 3-34) lost to Ballards Valley 184-3 in 22 overs (Ziggy Levy 58, Kenroy Lewis 43; Konroy Miller 1-25, Fitzroy Peterkin 1-16) by seven wickets.

Comma Pen 215 all out in 28 overs (Fernando Black 35, Orville Bent 34; Hyde Bent 3-39; Kenroy Ross 2-39) lost to Tryall 217-5 in 29 overs (Dennis Orridge 59, Courtney Witter 57; Fernando Black 2-53, Andre Dyer 2-63).

Southside 184-8 in 35 overs (Yohan Andrew 49, Andre Thompson 29; D. Powell 3-25, Wayne Billings 2-33) beat Uprising which replied with 141 all out in 30 overs (Wayne Billings 23, Chris Dyer 19; Vineyard Woolcock 3-11, Yohan Andrew 4-15)

INSPORT football

The final round of quarter-final matches in the INSPORT/Dr Christopher Tufton Community football league will be played tomorrow.

All Stars tackle Mountainside at Mountainside while Fustic Grove take on Billy's Bay at Crawford. All matches begin at 3:00 p.m.

The semi-final matches are scheduled for January 24.

This year's champions are expected to take home the Dr Christopher Tufton Trophy and $100,000

Second place will walk away with $50,000 while third and fourth will pocket $30,000 and $20,000 respectively.

Surfing at Lighthouse beach

The Lighthouse Surfing Beach at Plumb Point along the Palisadoes peninsula will be the venue for next Saturday's Jamaica Surfing Association's opening meet of the season.

According to a release from the Surfing association, all of Jamaica's top surfers are expected to take part in the event.

The other four events of the annual five-event series are spread throughout the year climaxing in December.

Jamaica's surfing is now followed closely by the international surfing world and local surfers have now started to attract international sponsorship attention.

RBTT Chess tournament

The Jamaica Chess Federation's 2009 chess season continues today with the second phase of the 2008/2009 RBTT Corporate Area schools chess championships at the RBTT Bank head office in New Kingston.

Eight teams that placed second and third in their respective zones in the Corporate Area preliminaries last year, will attempt to secure one of four remaining berths in the quarter-finals. The eight teams are Campion College B, Kingston College A, Kingston College B, Calabar B, Campion College C, Charlie Smith, Tivoli Gardens A and Calabar C.

The teams will be competing in a three round Swiss play-off, starting at 9 a.m.

Campion College B and Kingston College A start as favourites to take the top spots including two of the quarter-final berths.

The top four teams from the play-off will advance to the quarter-finals, along with Camperdown, Campion College A, Calabar A and Wolmer's.

St Thomas Major League

Action in the Captain's Bakery-sponsored St Thomas Football Association Major league kicks off this afternoon.

Ten teams led by defending champions Spring Rain have entered the competition.This year's sponsorship has been increased from $1.1m to $1.25m, mainly due to the increase in the referee's fee, which was announced by the Jamaica Football Federation.

Wayne Thompson, acting president of the St Thomas FA, welcomed the Captain's Bakery sponsorship for another year.

In today's opening game, Spring Rain, which failed to advance to the Eastern Confederation Super League, face Hillside at 4p.m.

CTL Portmore domino

Eagle View and Fort International maintained their unbeaten runs after nine matches in the CTL Portmore/St. Catherine domino league last Sunday.

Fort International whipped Old Harbour Bay 300-245, while Eagle View defeated Ackee Pod 300-292 in a countdown.Also unbeaten are Eradication with 32 points, but from eight matches.

In other matches played last Sunday, Hurricane clipped Caribbean Classic 300-295 in an exciting countdown, Masterpiece also pipped Prozz and Conzz 300-297 in another countdown, while Correctional Services beat Garveymeade 300-221.

In other matches, Seamaster beat High Roller 300-297, Lime Tree beat Westchester 300-292, while Marlie Mount stopped Ken's Wildflower 300-293, all in countdowns.

Porter takes top title

National Master Russell Porter captured the recently held Frederick Cameron Chess Open title.

Porter entered the final round unbeaten on 4.5 points, needing only a draw from his final round opponent, National Master Brandon Wilson, which he did to secure the title.

Second place went to National Master Andrew Mellace, who finished on five points, the same as Porter.

In other categories Diego Avaria of Chile was adjudged the best new player; Lucien Rowe won the best rural player award; Phillip Pryce was the best junior; and Margoe Williams won the best female player.

The amateur section was won by Ardenne High student Kareem Wright, who ended on 5.5 points, half point ahead of his nearest rivals Chad Lawrence and Oshane Reid who each ended on five points.

Chad Lawrence won the best under 14 prize, Douglas Byfield took the best under 12 award, while John Lord was adjudged the best player under 10.

Pattex Cup skittles

Defending champions Meadowvale and Eastern All Stars are leaders of their respective zones after eight round of matches in the Jamaica Skittles Federation Pattex Cup competition last Sunday. Meadowvale lead Zone 'B' with 66 points, thanks to five wins and three losses. They defeated Mercury 7-4 to be two points ahead of closest rivals Rowe's Strikers.Rowe's were pipped 6-5 by House of Peace in an away match. House of Peace and The Dip are jointly in third with 52 points, followed by Mercury on 38 and Mystix with 14 points after registering only one win.

In Zone 'A' Eastern Strikers lead with 82 points, representing six wins and two losses. They are clear of three teams locked in second place with 64 points. These are Eagles (formerly Cherry's Strikers), Dragon and Mister C from Spanish Town. Last Sunday, Eagles continued their poor run in the second round after going under 6-5 to Waltham Strikers at House of Peace, losing their third consecutive match.Dragon, on the other hand, beat Olympic Strikers 7-4, but Mister C were beaten by Eastern All-Stars on Sunday, failing in their bid to be a clear second.
