Asst coach pleased with weekend sessions

Anthony Foster, Gleaner Writer

Assistant coach of Jamaica's volleyball teams, Garth Bonner, has declared last weekend's training sessions a success.

Last Saturday and Sunday, the national women's and men's teams, under the watchful eyes of Bonner, had two training sessions each at the University of West Indies (UWI) Mona Bowl Gymnasium.

Bonner, in the absence of the respective women's and men's head coaches, Lynford Foreman and Dave Jack, took the players through intense training as they prepare for the World Championships qualifying series scheduled from May 17-24.

Successful session

"It was very successful," said Bonner, who believes with the added interest of the players, great things are in store for volleyball.

"We got to work on the basics," he added, while explaining that these areas were poor given the displays at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Invitational tournament, which was held last month.

Serving, blocking, backcourt play and fitness were some of the basic areas Bonner identified as weak.

The teams next meet for full training next month and Bonner said this time, much attention will be given to offence.

"We are going to spend a lot of time working on the offence, because that was inconsistent in the last Caribbean tournament, held in July," he said.
