Lyn lifts U-10 crown

AFTER A busy weekend of tennis, the boys' Under-10 final of the Globe Insurance Tennis Champion-ship was won easily by Roger Lyn, who defeated Kyle Martin 6-1, 6-0 at the Liguanea Club, New Kingston.

In stark contrast, on Sunday, the boys' Under-12 category was a close-run affair with Andrew Bicknell managing to scrape past Jason Graham 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 to take home the title.

The boys' Under-14 final of the event which started on August 22 was spiced up by the fact that both competitors were teammates. Nevertheless, Alex Anderson easily dispatched Giovanni Segree 6-1, 6-0.

In a bizarre turn of events, the boys' Under-18 title was awarded to Mackoy Malcolm by default after his opponent, Matthew Rodrigues, forfeited the match when rain hampered play with the score tied at 2-2.

There was also a clash of teammates on the girls' side of the draw as Shantal Blackwood met Siquena Sinclair in the final of the girls' Under-18 category.

Rain stopped play

Blackwood overcame her teammate 7-5, 6-0. Rain stopped play in the one remaining final, that of the girls' Under-14 tournament. Michaelann Denton had taken the first set 6-3 and Phadria Kepple was 4-3 up in the second set when conditions deteriorated to such an extent that the players were unable to finish the match. Play will continue at a later date in order to decide the outcome.

Nadia Mitchell, accounts executive of Globe Insurance Limited, was on hand to make the presentations to the winners and runners-up of each category. Tony Martin was present at the tournament to represent Tennis Jamaica, while Judith Denton acted as the master of ceremonies for the whole event.

Llockett McGregor, the tournament director, wrapped up the event by thanking everyone for their participation and their continued support in the development of the sport.
