St Catherine and St Andrew claim the parish titles

ST CATHERINE and St Andrew captured the male and female parish titles on the second day of the national table tennis championships at G.C. Foster College yesterday.

St Catherine dethroned defending champions St Andrew 3-0 in the men's section while St Andrew stopped Clarendon 3-1 in the women's.

In the men's final, Gary Pantry defeated Michael Cai 11-4, 11-6, 11-6 and Marlon Chin beat Emani McPherson 11-2, 11-8, 11-3. Chin then teamed with Randolph Sinclair to whip Kane Watson and McPherson 12-10, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9 in the doubles to give St Catherine their 3-0 victory.

In the women's final, Clarendon got off to a swift start when Shenique Clare beat Ashli Alexander 11-4, 6-11, 11-9, 9-11, 14-12. However, national champion Yvonne Foster pulled St. Andrew level when she stopped Crystal Campbell 11-1, 11-4, 11-1.

Doubles champions

Foster then teamed with Shaunda Brash to defeat Clare and Anique Henriques 11-6, 11-5, 11-6, in the doubles for a 2-1 lead. Alexander then defeated Henriques 11-7, 11-1, 11-6 to seal the 3-1 victory.

Meanwhile, Derek Walcott and Ashli Alexander captured the boys' and girls' Under-13 singles crowns on Friday night.

Walcott defeated Nicholas Mahfood 11-8, 4-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-9, while Alexandra fought back from a set down to beat Louri Nembhard 8-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-6.

Action continues today with the senior singles finals.
