Unbeaten Selassie crush Wasps

Selassie Gardens maintained their unbeaten record with a 78-37 hammering of Wasps last night in the Homestyle Juices Division One Basketball League at the National Stadium court.

Selassie top their zone with a 13-0 record and only last week shared an unbeaten record with the other zone leader, Hagley Park Thorns, before they lost to Swift Sons A.

Selassie got off the mark early with a 26-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. For most of the first half Selassie employed a full court press defence which troubled Wasps and helped set the tempo for their offence.

Steve Tucker, who scored three consecutive three-pointers in the first quarter, led the the winners with 19 points while Eugene Dixon was the only Wasps player in double digits with 10 points.

Selassie Gardens coach Dennis Gardner credits his team's success to teamwork and said that they are looking forward to meeting the other zone winner in the mid-season final, which should come from Hagley Park, Eastern Pistons or Swift Sons A.

Confident

"We are confident. We are not daunted by the opposition," said Gardner.

Wasps are the polar opposite of Selassie Gardens - winless in 14 games.

Despite having an individually talented squad, Wasps' coach Lamar Dixon said his team has been affected by outside influences.

"They are not allowing themselves to develop a chemistry," said Dixon. "Their minds are really preoccupied with a lot of different things and there is just no chemistry."

In another game last night, Blazing Panthers beat Rollington Town Bears 80-68. Philip Anderson led the winners with 19 points while Akeem Kerr had a game-high 33 points in a losing effort for Bears.
