Camperdown High sixth-former, Damion Davy, claimed the National Junior Chess Champion title on Sunday at the RBTT Bank Head Office in New Kingston.

Davy took home the title after registering a convincing final round victory over two-time champion and favourite, National Master Brandon Wilson in the final round.

Davy ended on five points from seven games, half-point ahead of Wilson who took second place with 4.5 points. Third place was shared by Campion's Zachary Ramsay and Stuart James of Wolmer's Boys who each ended on four points.

Fifth was shared by Lucien Rowe and Campion's Phillip Pryce on 3.5 points each, seventh was defending champion Onaje La Mont of Glenmuir on three points and eighth was Campion's Kadeem Knight who could only muster a half point.

Unlike the previous five years, the tournament was closed to the top eight active juniors in the country, which resulted in a higher standard of play.

The Junior Girls Championship, which ran concurrently with the National Junior Championship, was won by Margoe Williams of Queen's High. Williams defeated Alethia Edwards in a top of the table clash in the final round to take the title on tie-break over Edwards, after both players ended on four points.

Another Camperdown student, Peter Thomas, won the Junior Invitational tournament which was also staged alongside the National Junior Championship.

Thomas ended on four points, the same as Walter Williams. Thomas, however, took the title on tiebreak.
