Munro clip Wolmer's to top U-19 hockey

by LeVaughn Flynn, Staff Reporter

Munro College won their third straight U-19 schoolboy hockey title yesterday at the Mona Astro Turf after clipping Wolmer's Boys 1-0. A 45th- minute goal by Oshane Haseley, who was voted the MVP of the final, gave the St. Elizabeth team the win.

"I have a set of very disciplined and dedicated boys who follow instructions very well," said Fitzroy Rowe, coach of Munro. "So, with that attitude, there is not much to do as a coach but facilitate their growth."

Munro also had the competition's leading scorer in Selvin Rose.

Earlier in the game, Wolmer's had a golden opportunity to go in front, but Patrick Hyman lobbed the ball over goal when he only had the goalie to beat.

Said Wolmer's coach Norris Davis: "We lacked the experience and the expertise ... It was a reasonably good performance from the team, but it is disappointing not being champions."

Munro will also be hot favourites for the U-16 division, which starts on March 31, as, according to Rowe "80 percent of the Under-19 squad will play in the under-16 competition."

Meanwhile, nine players from Munro and eight from Wolmer's have been selected to the national U-21 squad which begins training today, but Rowe pointed out that the selection poses a problem for his players.

"I'm concerned if they will be able to take up the offer because they live out of town (Kingston) and hockey is not a sport that receives a lot of sponsorship," Rowe said.

"So, if they're not able to do a substantial amount of work on their own, they might not make it."

Prior to the final, Papine beat Excelsior 3-2 on penalties in the third-place play-off. Arnold Gentles, Geovanni Green and Mario Anderson scored for Papine, while Howard Robinson and Omari Anderson converted for Excelsior.
