Glenmuir, Camperdown bag chess titles

Glenmuir High and Camper-down High captured the RBTT Rural and Corporate Area Schools Chess Championship titles respectively at the Courtleigh Hotel on Saturday.

In the final of the rural area championship, defending national champions Glenmuir High lived up to expectation in registering a comfortable 3-1 win over Montego Bay Community College (MBBC). Winning for Glenmuir were National Junior Champion Onaje La Mont on board one, Mikhail Gillespie on board three and Adrian Allen on board four. Oneil Hall saved MBCC from the whitewash when he defeated Glenmuir's Laurence Davey on board two.

In the Corporate Area championship, Camperdown created a mild upset in dispatching Campion 3-1 in front of the large audience that filled the Windsor Suite at the Courtleigh Hotel.

At one stage Campion appeared to be on the verge of taking the match as they were winning on three of the four boards. However, with the assistance of some inaccurate play by the Campionites, Camperdown came back into the match and eventually pulled off the victory. Winning for Camperdown were Rayon Walters on board one, Damion Davy on board three and Warren Cornwall on board four. Zachary Ramsay on board two salvaged a point for Campion.

Glenmuir and Camperdown will now turn their attention to the National Championship match between the two teams, scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday at the RBTT Bank head office in New Kingston.
