Five reach quarter-finals of RBTT Chess Champs

Camperdown, Kingston College, Glenmuir, Iona and Campion have all advanced directly to the quarter-final stage of the 2007/2008 RBTT National Schools Chess Championship.

In the Kingston leg of the Corporate Area Championship, Camperdown finished atop Zone 1a with 12.5 points, ahead of Wolmer's Girls on 9.5, Wolmer's Boys B - 7.5, KC B - 5.5 and St. George's College - 3.

Camperdown will now advance directly to the Corporate Area quarter-finals, while Wolmer's Girls and Wolmer's Boys B will compete in an eight-team play-off set for January next year, to identify the final four teams to complete the Corporate Area quarterfinal list.

Kingston College claimed another of the Corporate Area quarter-final berths after topping Zone 1b with 18.5 points, ahead of Wolmer's Boys A - 15.5, Charlie Smith - 9, and Camperdown B - 5. Wolmer's Boys A and Charlie Smith will therefore move on to the eight-team play-offs in search of places in the quarter-finals.

In St. Andrew leg Campion College A topped Zone 2a with a perfect 16 points from as many games, ahead of Queen's - 11, Calabar B - 8 and Meadowbrook A - 5.

Campion have therefore advanced directly to the Corporate Area quarter-finals to join Camperdown and Kingston College. Queens and Calabar B will join Wolmer's Girls, Wolmer's Boys A, Wolmer's Boys B, and Charlie Smith in the play-offs for the final four quarter-final berths.

With one round still to be played in Zone 2b, Ardenne with 16.5 points are set to qualify directly to the Corporate Area quarter-finals, ahead of Calabar A - 13.5, Campion B - 6 and Meadowbrook B - 3. The final round of Zone 2b is scheduled to take place at the Ardenne High Library on Friday.

The Middlesex section of the Rural Area Championship saw Iona High and defending rural and all-island champions Glenmuir High advancing directly to the Rural Area quarter-finals. Glenmuir topped Zone 4a ahead of Denbigh High, Clarendon College, Belair, St. Catherine High, Portmore Community College, Decarteret, Ebony Park Heart Academy and Bishop Gibson, while Iona topped Zone 4b ahead of St. Mary High.
