Ja turn back Venezuela 4-1

JAMAICA, ON the back of wins by David Patterson, Brad Lowe, Chris Binnie and Bruce Burrowes, turned back Venezuela 4-1 in the opening round of the Caribbean Junior Squash Championship in the Cayman Islands yesterday.

Defending champs Guyana also started well when their boys' team defeated the hosts.

As team championship play began at the South Sound Squash Courts yesterday morning, the Guyanese cruised past the Cayman Islands 4-1 to join Jamaica and Bermuda in the winners' row of the boys' event.

Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago logged comfortable wins in the girls' competition.

Although playing without their new Caribbean Under-19 champion Damion DaSilva, the Guyanese were untroubled as Stanley Marcus, Ryan Farnum, Kristian Jeffrey and Alexander Arjoon steered them to victory with wins in straight games.

Under-15 player Rahul Singh, suffered the only defeat for Guyana, going down in four games to Alain Mudeen.

Guyana are defending the boys', girls' and overall champions.
